AFRICA PAINTED PINK: MICATO SAFARIS’ ROMANCE OF KENYA & TANZANIA SAFARI

NEW YORK, NY – For generations, women have swooned at Robert Redford and Meryl Streep’s love affair in the classic film, “Out of Africa”. Inspired by the romance of the movies and the natural beauty of East Africa, luxury safari outfitter Micato Safaris introduces its Romance of Kenya and Tanzania Safari. A celebration of pink—from millions of pink flamingos flocking at Lake Nakuru to blazing sunsets over the Indian Ocean, the Romance of Kenya and Tanzania safari is custom-designed to ensure the romantic getaway of a lifetime. 18 Days, $54,365 per person, based on double occupancy.

Where else but Kenya, the world’s largest supplier of roses, to start? Guests arrive in Nairobi at their elegant suite at the historic Norfolk Hotel to find their room filled with bounteous bouquets of blushing pink roses. Custom-tailored safari outfits from the exclusive Italian sportswear outfitter Beretta are laid upon the bed, beautifully gift-wrapped with pink ribbons.

This afternoon, guests take their first steps into a world of romance and adventure, a world of thousand-year-old native traditions, eighteenth-century explorers, and astounding natural beauty. The first stop is Kiambethu Farm, a lovely tea estate in the Limuru Highlands. After a lavish lunch, guests may stroll through the enchanting grounds, enjoying balmy air and soft breezes. That evening, dinner is at the exclusive Palacina Hotel, where guests will sample Swahili & Mediterranean cuisine paired with African wines at the hotel’s top-rated Moonflower restaurant.

Day two in Nairobi brings a host of adventures, including a visit to Karen Blixen’s home, now a museum that chronicles her life and her love affair with Denys Finch Hatton, made famous in “Out of Africa”. Also on the itinerary for the day is a visit with Dame Daphne Sheldrick, a world-class conservationist famous for rescuing and rearing orphaned elephants and rhinos. Finally, guests will visit the Giraffe Center of Nairobi, where a special ceremony has been arranged to name a giraffe in their honor. This evening, guests’ arrival will be toasted with Kenya’s famous pink cocktail, Dawa, at Lavington, the home of Micato Safaris’ founders in Kenya, Felix and Jane Pinto.

The following day, after a leisurely breakfast, guests drive to Lake Nakuru, which boasts more than 400 avian varieties, including millions of pink flamingos, who gather to feed in the shallow, alkaline lake. This evening, experience the colorful spectacle of traditional tribal dances performed by natives of a nearby village, and overnight in the supreme comfort of a suite at Lake Nakuru Lodge.

The next stop on the itinerary is the renowned Serengeti. With its vast rolling plains, flat-topped acacias, and huge herds of animals, it’s everything you expect Africa to be. It is the greatest wildlife spectacle remaining on the planet, where herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle cover the plains from horizon to horizon. Two days of unforgettable game viewing are followed by romantic pink sunsets and “sundowner” cocktail evenings at Kirawira Tented Camp, which epitomizes 1920’s colonial-style with its Persian rugs, wind-up phonographs, and mahogany bars.

Then it’s off to Ngorongoro Crater, one of the true wonders of the world. Located at the eastern edge of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area contains within its borders 30,000 mammals, including the last population of black rhino in northern Tanzania and all the “big five” game animals. Guests overnight for the next two nights at the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, where hot baths infused with pink rose petals greet guests at the end of a day’s game viewing.

After breakfast the next day, guests head via private charter to the legendary Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, nestled in the foothills of snow-capped Mount Kenya. The Safari Club harkens back to an age when romance, adventure, and elegance merged; when those with fame and wealth, such as William Holden and Clark Gable, came to East Africa to live out their passion for an untamed wilderness coupled with ultimate opulence.

Here, sweethearts may enjoy the exhilaration of riding horseback through the surrounding hills, or the relaxation of a couples’ massage in the Fairmont’s newly renovated spa. Dinner holds a special surprise — a made-to-order cocktail for her featuring a 6-carat pink topaz! Whether it’s an engagement, anniversary, or just because, the evening ends with a special toast of Tattinger La Francaise Champagne, a premier brut rose.

The next stop on this magical safari is the Maasai Mara, arguably the finest game sanctuary in Kenya. Guest accommodations during their stay are at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club, set high over a river teeming with hippos. Here, guests ascend to new romantic heights with a hot air balloon safari, watching as a stunning panorama unfolds below. Giraffe and zebra frolic on the plains below, and traditional Maasai villages can be seen from above. Upon descent, an elegant bush breakfast awaits, complete with china, silver, and made-to-order omelets and pineapple and champagne cocktails.

The final stop on this amazing journey is arguably the most romantic of all….After a private plane transfer to Zanzibar and a day exploring ancient, exotic Stone Town, guests will be transferred by boat to an entirely private island, Mnemba Island. The only inhabitants are the staff and guests staying in 10 “banda” cottages, each hand-woven from traditional Zanzibarian palm matting. While away the hours in this blissful tropical beach paradise with no agenda—nothing to do but enjoy this protected marine preserve, blazing pink sunsets, and each other.
